Teusner Wines is a producer in the Barossa Valley region of South Australia. It makes a range of wines from the main Rhône grape varieties, including Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvèdre).
The company was formed in 2001 when brothers-in-law Kym Teusner and Mick Page overheard a conversation in a pub about ripping up a parcel of low-yielding 85-year-old Grenache vines. Teusner and Page offered to pay about three times more that what the growers were currently getting if the vines stayed in the ground. A winemaking business was born from this encounter, and today Teusner Wines is based on relationships with partner growers who own old, well-maintained vineyards. Many of these growers are either relatives or close friends.
Today, Teusner makes more than 20 different wines from fruit from the Barossa and Eden Valleys. This includes a range of varietal wines made from Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, as well as several GSM blends, a Durif and a Cabernet Sauvignon. Teusner also makes a range of white wines from Chardonnay, Semillon, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. There is also a sparkling Shiraz and a rosé.
Teusner Wines are very hands-on in the winery. The grapes are crushed in their individual picking bins (by people jumping in) to allow close scrutiny on a small scale – though this does slow progress at the peak of harvest.
