Selle & Mosca is the largest wine producer in Sardinia, with a wide range of wines featuring local specialties, Mediterranean varieties and international . It is known particularly for its wines from Cannonau (Grenache), and Vermentino, plus the Torbato grape, which is grown exclusively by the company at their I Piani estate.
Located at Alghero in the northwest corner of the island, I Piani is one of the largest wine estates in Europe with 520 hectares (1285 acres) of contiguous vineyards. In addition to the varieties mentioned above, the vineyard features (alone or in combination) red Bordeaux varieties, some more recently planted Monica, and Sauvignon Blanc. Elsewhere there is a six hectare (15 acre) plot of old vine Carignano del Sulcis in the south of the island, and 15 hectares (37 acres) of Vermentino di Gallura DOCG in the northeast.
A modern winemaking complex at I Piani is placed next to the original 1903 cellars. The three production lines can handle 30,000kg (33 US tons) per hour, and the winery boats 150 stainless steel tanks and oak barriques and larger barrels to age 160,000 litres (42,000 US gallons) of wine.
The company was founded in 1999 by Eriminio Sella and Eduardo Mosca, two Piemontese entrepreneurs. In 2002 it was acquired by the Campari Group.
