Ferrando is an estate owned by the Ferrando family in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont. Starting first with vineyards in Carema, the estate has since expanded its portfolio to include the wines of Canavese and Erbaluce di Caluso.
The foundations of the Ferrando estate lie in the late 1800s, when Giuseppe Ferrando began a winemaking business in Ivrea. The estate first began producing Carema wine, from the Nebbiolo grape variety. in 1957 and later established a wine cellar in the town of Carema in 1964. The vineyards in Carema are particularly unique as they employ a traditional vine-training system whereby vines are cultivated on pergolas constructed with stone columns, divided over a series of stone-walled terraces known as tabbie.
Today Ferrando cultivates approximately 3 hectares (7 acres) of Nebbiolo vines in the Carema DOC to produce two varietal expressions of Carema wine: White Label and Vintage Black Label. The Nebbiolo grapes are harvested by hand and both wines aged for approximately 36 months, with at least a third of this time spent in oak. These wines represent the top end of the estate's portfolio and the Vintage Black Label is only produced in excellent vintage years.
The remaining wine range is predominantly dedicated to the Erbaluce grape, including the dry white wines of Erbaluce di Caluso and Erbaluce di Caluso Spumante, the sweet dessert Caluso Passito wine and a late-harvest sweet wine known as Solativo. Ferrando also produces a Canavese Rosso made from a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes.
