Bodegas San Román is situated in the Toro DO of the Castilla y León region in northwestern Spain. It is owned by Bodegas Mauro, and was established in 1997 to capture the soil characteristics of the Toro region – loose and stony with clay subsoil that crucially retains water, essential in such a dry region.
The estate has 80 hectares (200 acres) of vineyards planted with a significant majority of Tempranillo (called Tinta de Toro here) as is typical of the region. A small amount Grenache makes up the rest of the plantings. San Román produces two wines, both red. The flagship is the Toro San Román, which has a higher production and commands a higher price. It is 100 percent Tempranillo and sees 24 months in both American and French oak of various ages. (© Copyright material, Wine-Searcher.com). The second is the Toro Prima, which includes roughly 10 percent Grenache and sees 14 months and French and American oak also of various ages.
