Villa Poggio Salvi is a Tuscan wine estate based in Montalcino, known for its Brunello di Montalcino wines made from the Sangiovese grape. It has been owned by the Tagliabue family since 1979, although winegrowing here dates back to the 16th century.
The estate is made up of 21 hectares (52 acres) of estate vineyards on the sunny southern side of the Montalcino hill. Here, the clay soils and marine breezes make for an excellent terroir for Sangiovese Grosso, the local clone of the ubiquitous Tuscan variety. The name "Salvi" refers to the supposed health-giving effects of this terroir. Villa Poggio Salvi's modern winery is partly subterranean and set within the contours of the hillsides.
Villa Poggio Salvi makes a range of wines from the area, led by Pomona, a single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino named after the Roman goddess of fruitful abundance, whose image features on all labels. This wine is aged for 30 months in Slavonian oak before release. The Montalcino lineup also includes a standard Brunello and a Riserva, as well as a Rosso di Montalcino, all of which are aged in oak for a period determined by the cuvée and the vintage. Villa Poggio Salvi also makes a grappa and a Moscadello di Montalcino.
The Tagliabue family also own an estate near Siena producing Chianti Colli Senesi and Toscana IGT wines based on Sangiovese and Merlot. A Morellino di Scansano is also vinified in the Montalcino cellars.
