Chateau Citran

Château Citran is a large Bordeaux wine estate in the commune of Avensan, making wine under the Haut-Médoc appellation mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It is one of the older properties in the Médoc, with its history going back to the 1200s, when it was a fortified stronghold. The Donissan de Citran family ran the estate from that time until 1832.

The vineyard extends to around 100 hectares (247 acres) divided into two plots: one surrounding the château and the other not far from the Margaux estate Chateau Ferrière. These plots are planted to almost equal amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with 5ha (12 acres) planted to Cabernet Franc. The entire estate covers around 410 hectares (1013 acres), including some wooded areas that are earmarked for additional Cabernet Sauvignon plantings.

Along with the Château Citran grand vin, the estate produces a second wine called Moulins de Citran, and also produces a rosé in some vintages.

Château Citran's current owners, the Merlaut family, took over in 1996. The family, operating under the name Groupe Taillan, also own properties like Gruaud-Larose and Chasse-Spleen, as well as the négociant Ginestet.
