Saltram Wine is a Barossa Valley wine estate with over a century of history. It has a large portfolio of wines that focuses on the region's popular red varieties, especially Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Saltram also makes wines from Malbec, Petit Verdot, Barbera, Tempranillo and Sangiovese, while the limited white wine production revolves mostly around Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling.
The estate was founded in 1844 by William Salter, who bought the property in the newly surveyed Barossa Valley. The first vineyard was planted in 1859, a 4-hectare (10-acre) block of Shiraz, along with a winery and cellar space to officially establish the label. The first commercial vintage was produced in 1862, and within a decade the vineyards had expanded to 12ha (30 acres) of Shiraz and 4ha (10 acres) of Palomino for a fortified white wine in a Sherry style.
Today Saltram farms a 45-ha (111-acre) estate vineyard and sources fruit from several others in Barossa and the Eden Valley subregion. The vines are hydrated using drip irrigation, which helps the viticulturalists limit the amount of water in the vineyards, leading to healthy, strong vines that produce high-quality berries.
The brand is owned by the major wine company Treasury Wine Estates, and has been exported internationally since the late 19th century. Treasury also owns significant labels such as Beringer Vineyards and Penfolds.
