Château Marquis de Terme can trace its history back to 1762 when François de Peguilhan, Marquis de Terme, married Mademoiselle Ledoulx of Emplet. The French estate’s Margaux wine was subsequently classified as a 'Quatrième Cru (Fourth Growth) Classé' in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux wines. In 1935 the property was acquired by Pierre Sénéclauze who then passed it on to his three sons Pierre-Louis, Philippe and Jean. From 2009 onwards the management of the estate has fallen to General Manager Ludovic David who works in close collaboration with the Sénéclauze family.

The 35 hectares (86 acres) of vineyard are picked by hand each year, producing approximately 13,000 cases of wine annually. The 35-year-old vines are planted in high gravel soils and include 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. Vinification takes place in concrete vats and ageing in 40% new oak barrels for an average of 18 months. In addition to the Margaux wine the estate produces a second wine known as La Couronne de Marquis de Terme. Launched in 2008, this wine is a blend consisting of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. From 2013, the Château Marquis de Terme has also begun experimenting with producing organic wines and aims to be 100% certified organic by 2017.

The location of the estate at the heart of the Margaux appellation means that the climate is heavily influenced by both the Gironde estuary and Bay of Biscay, as well as the sheltering effects of the coastal pine forests that protect the vines from the westerly and northwesterly winds.
