Familia Schroeder

Familia Schroeder is a wine producer located in Argentina's southernmost wine-producing region, Patagonia. The 140-hectare (346-acre) vineyard occupies rocky terrain that is made suitable for viticulture by irrigation from ice-melt water. The climate of warm days and cold nights together with favorable winds and low humidity also help to provide ideal conditions for the growth of vines.

The vineyard is planted with a range of grape varieties: Malbec, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Torrontés. The winery overlooks the vineyard and covers five levels that accomodate a gravity flow system. The grape reception area occupies the highest level of the building, with the ground floor housing the barrel cellars. The barrels stored here are 70 percent French oak and 30 percent American oak.

Familia Schroeder produces a range of wines under several key labels, including Saurus, Puestero and Alpataco, as well as the standard Familia Schroeder range. The flagship Familia Schroeder wines include a blend of Pinot Noir and Malbec, as well as varietal Merlot, Malbec and Pinot Noir wines. These are aged for up to two years in new French oak barrels and are bottle-aged for over 12 months. The Saurus lines and the estate's restaurant are named for the dinosaur skeleton discovered in the grounds of the estate during the winery's construction. An image of the Aeolosaurus (Greek for 'wind lizard') even appears on the labels of the Saurus wine bottles.
