Ron Zacapa Centenario is widely regarded as the top brand of Guatemalan rum, and has developed a strong global following for its multi award-winning portfolio, all of which feature extended aging. It was created in 1976 by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala to celebrate the centenary of the foundation of the town of Zacapa in the east of the country.
The rums are made from the concentrated first pressings of sugar cane juice, and aged and blended using the solera method traditionally used for Sherry. The blended rums pass through four different types of oak barrels that have been used for American whiskey and Sherry. The final stage is in barrels in which sweet, viscous, Pedro Ximenez Sherry had matured. The barrels are stored 2300 meters (7500 feet) above sea level at an average temperature of 62°F (17°C). Color and sugar is added at the end of the process.
The Reserva Limitada is an annual release finished in varied combinations of oak barrels in different conditions. For example, the 2014 release was aged in barrel in a herb garden for a further three years, so that aromas of coriander, fennel, tarragon and anise could influence the spirit.
