Bodegas Borsao is a large Spanish producer in the Campo de Borja DO focusing on the red grape variety Garnacha. It began in 1958 as a cooperative by multiple growers in the Borja region – just one of a number of cooperatives formed during the 1950s by small private producers combating a struggling economy. In 2001 the Cooperative of Borja merged with two others, Pozuelo and Tabuenca, to form Bodegas Borsao with 620 producer-members.
While being relatively young in its modern form, the cooperatives that came together to establish Bodegas Borsao have a long history in the region and were actively involved in Campo de Borja gaining its Denominación de Origen status in 1980. Borsao by itself accounts for close to 35 percent of total land under vine in Campo de Borja, where Garnacha represents 60 percent of the DO's production and 70 percent of Borsao's. While Grenache is the unchallenged dominant variety, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Tempranillo are also grown, mostly for use in blending. Macabeo is the most important white variety but overall production heavily favors red.
The majority of Bodegas Borsao wine is exported with up to 80 percent of its annual production sold internationally.
