A La Bossiere wine label

La Bossiere is a small Premier Cru climat in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation of the Burgundy wine region. This vineyard – planted exclusively to Pinot Noir – is the westernmost in the commune, and is responsible for producing a rich, structured red Burgundy with smoky fruit characters.

The vineyard lies at the very apex of the narrow Combe de Lavaux, a long, thin valley that juts westward into the Cote d'Or just to the west of Gevrey-Chambertin village. It is surrounded on most sides by forest, but the much larger Clos des Varoilles climat is on La Bossiere's eastern border.

The vines are planted on a steep, southeast-facing slope that is exposed to the sunlight for a good portion of the day. This offers excellent ripening opportunities, but a cold westerly wind funneled through the Combe contributes much colder evenings. This diurnal temperature variation slows ripening, and the vineyards in this part of Gevrey-Chambertin are often the first to be harvested. As a result, La Bossiere wines tend to lack the plump, muscular finesse of wines from the sheltered Grand Cru vineyards, of which La Chambertin is a perfect example.

La Bossiere shares similar clay limestone soils to the rest of the vineyards in the Combe de Lavaux. These rocky, shallow soils have proven well suited to the Pinot Noir grape variety, and the dense structure of the wines is often attributed to the clay content of these soils.

The La Bossiere climat is a monopole, owned in its entirety by Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy, who also make Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru wines in the Lavaut Saint-Jacques and Champeaux climats.
