A Petits Cazetiers wine label

Les Petits Cazetiers is a tiny Premier Cru climat just north of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy's Cote de Nuits subregion. This walled enclave, planted entirely to Pinot Noir, covers barely two acres (less than 1ha) and only one producer makes a wine under the Les Petits Cazetiers Premier Cru name, that being Domaine Dominique Gallois.

The long, thin vineyard sits at the bottom of the hill, bounded by the much larger Combe au Moine and Les Cazetiers vineyards further up the slope. The gentle slopes on this part of the hill face south-east, giving vines a good view of the morning sunshine. This exposure helps to temper the cool continental climate felt throughout Burgundy, and the grapes are able to develop phenolic richness alongside acidity.

The terroir in Les Petits Cazetiers is quite similar to that in the larger Cazetiers vineyard, with the same limestone and marl soils. These rocky, well-drained soils are a particular feature of the climat: by forcing vines to grow deep root systems to access water in the clay below, these soils lead to stronger, healthier vines which tend to develop small, concentrated berries.

Gevrey-Chambertin wines tend toward strength and structure, and Les Petits Cazetiers Premier Cru Wines are no exception. While they do not have the ageing abilities of the Grand Cru wines like Le Chambertin and Clos de Beze, Les Petits Cazetiers wines are still full bodied with earthy, mushroomy flavors and aromas.
