The coat of arms of Saint-Christol

Saint-Christol is a named 'terroir' sub-region of Languedoc-Roussillon's Languedoc appellation. Along with Saint-Drezery, just a short distance to the south, it forms the eastern part of the Gres de Montpellier sub-region. This means that as a recognized source of higher-quality wines, the village may append its name to the Languedoc title on wine labels. The wines produced in Saint-Christol are made predominantly from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre grapes.

The area covered by the appellation is limited to the village of Saint-Christol, which is almost entirely surrounded by vines. The relatively flat and low-lying terrain (160ft/50m) is made up of mainly alluvial soils over limestone bedrock. The climate is definitively Mediterranean, with a slight marine influence due to Saint-Christol's proximity (12 miles/19km) to the southern French coast. The production zone of Muscat de Lunel lies almost immediately to the south, with the city of Montpellier located 13 miles (21km) to the west.
