The coat of arms of Cheverny

Cour-Cheverny is the appellation for the distinctive wines made from the Romorantin grape variety in a group of central Loire Valley vineyards between Tours and Orleans.

Promoted from VDQS status in March 1993, the title remains rather limited in terms of volume. The wines are produced from just under 125 acres (50ha) of Romorantin vines spread across 12 parishes, including Cheverny and, of course, Cour-Cheverny itself.

Romorantin, a traditional French grape variety, is on the brink of extinction and is now seen only in the central Loire. Plantings are decreasing every year in favor of 'international' varieties such as Chardonnay, with which Romorantin shares a common heritage. Gouais Blanc was the parent (maternal) of both varieties.

Fresh and lightly aromatic, Cour-Cheverny wines are best consumed within two years of vintage, although some develop interesting honeyed, waxy, citrus notes if allowed to age.
