Swan Hill is a small, eastern Australian wine region which straddles the Murray river, and thus the state boundary between Victoria and New South Wales. Although a fully independent wine region with its own GI (Geographical Indication), Swan Hill is often grouped together with the much larger Murray Darling region immediately to the west. Even the Australian government's wine regulating body lists production figures for 'Murray Darling Swan Hill' in its annual reports.

As is the case in Murray Darling, which also has one foot in New South Wales and the other in Victoria, the majority of Swan Hill's vineyards are on the southern – Victorian – side of the Murray river. They are concentrated in a substantial area immediately to the north of Swan Hill town. Chardonnay is the key variety grown here, along with Australia's three other favorites: Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

The reddish-brown loam soils for which Australia is famous are very much a feature of the Swan Hill region. The presence of the Murray means there is a strong presence of alluvial soil, particularly along the historical riverbeds. Both the Murray and Darling rivers are known for frequent changes of course.

The Swan Hill climate is of continental type: hot and dry with very low rainfall. That said, it is very slightly cooler than further down river, which makes the whole growing season – from budburst to ripening – a week or two later. The lack of atmospheric humidity helps to keep the vines free of fungal diseases such as mildew and assists in guaranteeing the high yields so important in the Big Rivers region.

Swan Hill is not to be confused with the Swan District and its sub-region, the Swan Valley, 1600 miles (2500km) away in Western Australia.
