The coat of arms of Basilicata

Basilicata IGT is the region-wide IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) title for southern Italy's Basilicata region.

Just 2% of Basilicata's total wine output (roughly 500,000 hectoliters) qualifies for the region's four DOCs, so particular emphasis is placed on the local IGT titles, and on the Vino di Tavola ('table wine') category.

The majority (roughly 75%) of Basilicata IGT wines are varietal reds made from Aglianico, the region's longstanding signature grape variety. The next most popular variety is Syrah, which makes up just 7% of the total output. White wines made under this title are dominated by Muscat and the ever-popular Chardonnay, which together account for roughly one bottle in 10 of all Basilicata IGT wine.

Despite the obvious dominance of a single style (dry red wines), the IGT laws here allow for the production of red, rosé and white wines, both still and sparkling.
