The coat of arms of Atina

Atina is a DOC of the Lazio wine region of central western Italy, created in 1999 to exclusively cover red wines from the Apennine hills of the Frosinone province. The communes covered by the Atina title are Gallinaro, Belmonte, Castello, Picinisco, Sant’Elia Fiumerapido, Alvito, Villa Latina, Santa Donato Valcomino, Vicalvi, Casalattico, Casalvieri, Settefrati and Atina itself.

The DOC's wines are made from a very French-sounding blend based on the Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (10%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and the key Rhone red grape Syrah. No less French is the varietal wine made under the Atina title, Atina Cabernet. This is in fact made from two varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

To earn the mention riserva, an Atina wine must reach a final alcohol level of at least 12% ABV (alcohol by volume), and have been aged for two years prior to commercial release, of which six months must have been spent in oak barrel.
