The coat of arms of Serrapetrona

Bianchello di Metauro is a DOC of the Marches wine region in central Italy. It specializes in white wines made from Bianchello (also known as Biancame), grown in the lower half of the Metauro river valley. The northern, hillier side of the Metauro has proved to be the source of the finest Bianchello di Metauro wines, particularly a belt just inland of the valley between Fano and Pesaro.

A classic example of the wine is pale yellow in color, almost straw-like, with a delicately dry, aromatic nose. Although not the most adventurous wine, this is the refreshing white style for which Marche, and indeed most of Italy, has become known. It was no surprise, then, when Bianchello di Metauro was announced as a DOC shortly after the region's iconic Verdicchios dei Castelli di Jesi and di Matelica. The riserva forms of the latter two have now been promoted to full DOCG status.

Bianchello di Metauro is similar in style to the white wines produced in the Colli Maceratesi, a zone theoretically limited to the hills around the town of Macerata, but which in fact spans the entire width of Marche.
