The coat of arms of The Province of Macerata

Terreni di Sanseverino is a red-wine DOC produced in the Macerata province in the Marches region of central Italy. It received its classification in 2006 and is made as a rosso (red) with the added designations of dried-grape passito and superiore: for the latter, it must be cask-aged for at least 18 months and spend a further eight to 12 months in bottle before release.

To earn the right to bear the Terreni di Sanseverino DOC title, a wine must comprise at least 50% Vernaccia Nera, and be made from grapes grown exclusively in the commune of Sanseverino Marche – not to be confused with San Severo in Puglia, 150 miles (250km) to the south. The remaining half of the blend can be made up from red-grape varieties sanctioned for use in the Macerata province, which usually means Montepulciano or Sangiovese. When Terreni di Sanseverino Moro appears on a wine label, it denotes a wine made from 60% Montepulciano rather than the standard 50% Vernaccia Nera.

Sanseverino is located just a few miles north of Serrapetrona, where Vernaccia Nera is used to make both still wines and the more esoteric, sparkling, red Vernaccia di Serrapetrona DOCG wine.
