The coat of arms of Isernia

Pentro di Isernia is situated in the small wine region of Molise, in the southern part of central Italy. It was one of the first areas to be awarded its DOC classification, alongside its neighbor Biferno in 1983. The wine-production zone is located in the hills around the western province of Isernia in northern Sannio, and in Agnone close to Sangro.

Three versions are covered under the DOC: bianco, rosso and rosato. Like Biferno wines, the white comprises Trebbiano Toscano (60–70%) with the addition of Bombino Bianco (30–40%). However the red and rose blends combine Montepulciano (60–70%) with Sangiovese (45–55%), the roses achieving their color through maceration of the must on the skins of the red grapes. A native red variety called Tintilia is also used in Biferno reds, lending the wines a full-bodied and intensely aromatic, flavorsome character.
