Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba (or simply Diano d'Alba) is found in Piedmont, in north-western Italy. This zone was promoted to DOCG status in January 2010 and currently has a total vineyard area of approximately 740 acres (300ha) surrounded by hills on which grapes for Dolcetto d'Alba are grown. It also encompasses the area around the town of Diano d'Alba, from which the wine takes its name. This zone lies between the Belbo and Tanaro rivers, also home of the famed DOCG wines Barolo and Barbaresco.
The vines are planted on calcerous, sandy and tufa-rich soils, at slightly higher altitudes than some of its neighbors; this situation favors the early-ripening Dolcetto grape, as does its sunny south-western exposure.
Diano d'Alba is one of seven Dolcetto wines, and all have either DOC or DOCG status. This red is a pure varietal, well regarded for its youthful and well-balanced character, as well as its rich, fruity and complex structure. The wine is also made as a superiore. Like its Dolcetto counterparts, it is distinguished by low acidity and a classic, slightly bitter almond finish.
