The coat of arms of Trani

Moscato di Trani is a DOC wine from the Puglia wine region of south-eastern Italy. The DOC title was introduced in September 1974, making it one of the longer-established DOCs in the region. It is probably the least famous of Italy's various Moscato-specific DOC/DOCG wines, and lies in the shadow of its northern cousin, Moscato d'Asti.

Perhaps obviously, the key grape variety used to make these white wines is Moscato Bianco (aka Moscato di Canelli and Muscat Blanc a Petit Grains). The variety is just one in the widespread, complex family of Muscat grapes. It thrives here in Puglia's warm, sunny Puglia climate, much as it does in southern French regions such as Languedoc Roussillon.

The Trani viticultural area runs up the back of the heel of Italy's 'boot'. Its area overlaps substantially with the Rosso Canosa and Castel del Monte zones, and its southern boundary is largely formed by the northern edge of Gravina.

The coastal town of Trani, at the heart of this DOC spiritually (if not geographically), has long been an important wine center, predominantly due to its function as a trading port. In ancient times, wines from all over the region were traded in Trani; the town's name even translates to 'inn' in the local dialect.
