Trento is the DOC title which covers wines specifically from the Trento commune in Trentino-Alto Adige, far northern Italy. Created in 1993, it is distinct from the Trentino DOC, which covers the whole of the Trentino province.
The Trento title covers sparkling wines made from the classic Champagne grapes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, accompanied on occasion by Pinot Blanc.
The environment around Trento is little different to any other part of the Adige valley: alpine peaks soaring many thousands of feet into the air, warm summer breezes rising up the valley walls in summer and low rainfall due to the protection offered by the mountains above. The city sits at an altitude of 640ft (195m) and a latitude of precisely 46 degrees north. It shares this latitude with Geneva and Beaujolais, so it comes as a surprise to many to find that Trento is one of Italy's warmest cities in the summer, with temperatures regularly reaching 104F (40C).
