The coat of arms of Veneto

Grappa di Amarone is grappa distilled from Amarone della Valpolicella grape marc, in the Veneto wine region of northern Italy.

Grappa is the classic Italian grape spirit, produced primarily in such regions as Veneto, Tuscany and Piedmont. The vineyards of Veneto produce vast quantities of it, but quantity and quality are not mutually exclusive. The most notable examples of high-quality grappe are from the Valpolicella wine region, and are a by-product of Amarone della Valpolicella wine production. As the amarone method involves a second fermentation of the skins used to make recioto wines, the marc used to make Grappa di Amarone has already been fermented twice before it arrives for distillation.

The Veneto region also produces Grappa di Recioto di Valpolicella, made from marc left over from the production of sweet Recioto della Valpolicella wines.

Other Italian grappas of note are Grappa di Brunello, from the Tuscan village of Montalcino (of Brunello di Montalcino fame), and Piedmont's famous Grappa di Barolo from Barolo.
