Toledo, capital of Castilla La Mancha

Toledo is the capital of the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha and is regarded as the cultural capital of northern Spain. Located 43 miles (70km) south of Madrid, on a hill overlooking the Tagus river, this historic city was once the capital of the Spanish Empire. Traditionally, it produced very little wine and does not have a separate DO (Denominación de Origen). However, the region is home to one of Spain's rare Denominaciones de Origen de Pago, awarded to Finca Dominio de Valdepusa. The estate is owned by the Marques de Grinon, Carlos Falco. His family has possessed the land since the 13th century, although he first planted vines here in the 1970s after studying in California.

With its rich history, stretching back two thousand years and incorporating three major religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – Toledo was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
