Sierra de Salamanca is one of Spain's Vino de Calidad con Indicación Géografica (VC) titles, covering an area western Castilla y Leon. Sierra Salamanca is the most southern of Castilla y Leon's three VCs, sitting right on the border with Extremadura. VC represents a level above Vino de la Tierra (VT) wines in terms of quality, but a level below Denominación de Origen (DO). The classification was introduced in 2003 in many ways as a more prestigious holding title, for regions waiting to accede to DO status, which they are eligible to apply for after five years. Sierra Salamanca became a VT in 2010.

Sierra de Salamanca VC's boundaries overlap with those of the region-wide Castilla y Leon VT. It is located in the Salamanca province after which it is named, at the edges of the Sistema Central (Central System mountains). Terraced vineyards have sat above the Alagon river for many centuries, with producers slowly climbing up to higher altitudes of Sierra de Francia (part of the Sistema Central mountain system). Vineyards can now be found anywhere between 1310ft and 3280ft (400-1000m).

The climate in Sierra de Salamanca is Mediterranean, enjoying a long, hot summer and a short, mild winter. The VC boasts a number of different soil types, unusual given the size of the designation. The soils are acidic, a feature that distinguishes them from the rest of Castilla y Leon. Sandy soils with granitic rock can be found in many parts, along with clay and shales. Each soil type imparts a different characteristic; shales mineral notes, sand more subtlety and elegance. Whilst water rentention in these soils tends to be poor, plentiful rain falls in winter and autumn, when it is most welcome.

Sierra de Salamanca has been a champion for native variety, Rufete. The lare-ripening variety is perfectly suited to the area, offering subtle yet complex wines with red fruit, spice and soft tannins. Tempranillo and Garnacha are the only other two red wine varieties to be authorized. Both varietal wines and blends can be found, with Rufete and Tempranillo blends proving popular. Three white wines are also authorized; Viura, Palomino and Moscatel a Grano Menudo (Muscat Blanc a Petit Grains), however the VC is primarily a red wine producer.

Sierra de Salamanca VC wines are all made in small capacity, yet modern wineries and all harvesting is done by hand. Winemaking sees minimal intervention and thus wines are generally terroir expressive.
