Getariako Txakolina or Txakoli de Getaria is a DO wine zone within Pais Vasco (the Basque Country), northern Spain. This rocky DO is the most important and most eastern of the Basque Country, lying just 18 miles (30km) from the French border. It is bordered by the Atlantic coast to the north and the formidable Pyrenees to the east, and is one of only three recognised areas for Txakoli (a Basque word, pronounced chac-o-lee, meaning 'wine made from a village' or 'wine village'). The others are Arabako Txakolina and Bizkaiko Txakolina.

The lush green side of the Pais Vasco

The tiny Getariako Txakolina region, which suffered the effects of phylloxera infestation in the 19th Century, established its own DO in 1990 as well as a Consejo Regulador (wine-regulating authority) to administer it. This led to a resurgence in local winemaking. Even though Getariako is the smallest of the three Txakoli DOs in terms of area, its production outstrips that of the other two.

Conditions in this part of País Vasco are a little different from those in its neighbors, as the cold influences of the Atlantic Ocean are offset by coastal hills, resulting in a milder climate. However, Getariako Txakolina is also known for its high rainfall – an average of 63 inches (1600mm) a year. Most vineyards are located on the gentle southeast-facing slopes and foothills of the Pyrenees.

Like the wines of Arabako Txakolina and Bizkaiko Txakolina, Getariako Txakolina's are dry, with a searing acidity; they are the perfect accompaniment to the local fish and seafood. That said, their acidity is slightly less pronounced than the wines of its neighbors, showing fewer green notes. Txakolis wines are also slightly sparkling, giving them a tingly feel on the finish. A pleasant bitterness will often linger, too.

The native Hondarrabi Zuri is the main grape variety in Getariako Txakolina, accounting for nearly 95% of total plantings. Hondarrabi Beltza is also permitted. According to the DO's regulations, the alcohol content of the wines should be between 9.5% and 11.5%; the majority have 10.5%. Txakoli wines are best drunk in their youth.
