Mendocino is an AVA in Mendocino County that comprises the six smaller appellations of Anderson Valley, Yorkville Highlands, McDowell Valley, Potter Valley, Redwood Valley and Cole Ranch.

It is located inland from the Pacific coast, but is still close enough to enjoy some of the ocean's cooling effects. The terroir varies considerably across this broad region, largely mirroring the mountainous topography, and the diversity in growing conditions is reflected in the range of wine styles produced.

The Potter Valley marks the northern end of the Mendocino AVA and also the beginning of the Russian river (of Russian River Valley). The river flows southwards towards Lake Mendocino, before heading towards the substantial vine plantings that line the river banks all the way to Sonoma County.

The prominent red grape varieties planted here are warmth-loving grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah and Petite Sirah. However, Mendocino's cooler sites are capable of producing Pinot Noir wines, both still and sparkling. Although far from dominant, white wines represent a respectable proportion of Mendocino wines. These are typically based on California's favorite white grape varieties, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
