Castilla y Leon VT is the catch-all Vino de la Tierra title covering the whole Castilla y Leon region of central Spain. In terms of quality, the VT category represents a step up from Vino de la Mesa (table wine), and while it imposes some restrictions on grape varieties, yields and aging, it is much less restrictive than the better-known Denominación de Origen classification.

Castilla y Leon is the largest wine region in all of Spain and ranks as Europe's third largest. In many ways, as is the case with Castilla y Leon VT, it acts as a holding title, giving wines greater recognition and encouraging the region to produce higher-quality wines to climb the ladder. It received its VT status is 2000.

Castilla y Leon's winemaking history is said to pre-date Roman settlement. In the Middle Ages, Catholic monks of the Cistercian order were particularly important in establishing the region's viticultural reputation, introducing new techniques that resulted in the emergence of quality wines. The number of DOs here is evidence that this region is ideal for the production of quality wine. The creation of the cover-all Castilla y Leon VT was pushed by a group of key producers who wanted the region's efforts acknowledged, particularly for growers who fell outside the boundaries of other designations.

Castilla y Leon VT occupies the northern half of the central Iberian plateau known as the Meseta Central. (The south is occupied by the equally expansive Castilla-La Mancha autonomous community and corresponding Castilla VT.) Castilla y Leon VT is mostly flat and desert-like. The climate is extreme continental, experiencing blisteringly cold winters and scorching summers. Rain is scarce, which forces vines to dig deep into the dark, chalky soil in search of nutrients and water. The Duero River (Portugal's Duoro) flows through the heart of the region and provides a much-needed water source.

Many grapes are permitted to be used in the VT. The white-wine varieties include the natives Godello, Macabeo and Dona Blanca, international grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer and obscure varieties such as Chelva. The myriad red-wine varieties have a similar mix: Pinot Noir, Syrah, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Rufete and Juan Garcia.

Wines labeled as Castilla y Leon VT may be white, rosé or red. The local conditions mean that they are typically concentrated, full and ripe.

Wine volume has decreased in recent years but the number of liters being bottled has increased, showing that the focus is shifting from quantity to quality.
