The coat of arms of Thann

Clos Saint Urbain is a walled vineyard in the village of Thann in southern Alsace. Located on the vertiginous slopes of the Rangen hillside, the clos covers just over 12 acres (5ha) and is a monopole of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht. The owners of this domaine are widely credited with the revival and subsequent Grand Cru classification of the Rangen site, which has been recognized as a source of excellent wine for many centuries. Thann's wine producers had largely abandoned Rangen in the 20th century because of the intensive amount of labor required to manage the 60% gradient of its slopes.

Zind-Humbrecht labels its Clos Saint Urbain wines with the historic clos name, but also the Rangen Grand Cru title. The wines – varietals made from Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer – are made under the Alsace Grand Cru appellation.

Not all of the famous Alsace Clos Vineyards have adopted the Grand Cru and appellation titles to which they are entitled, choosing instead to stay with the longer-established names of their lieu-dits.
